Chapter 11
The thin, lanky figure stood near her at the backside of her bed. Too tall to be Jaya. Dark blue cloth wrapped them from toe to head. Not an inch of skin showed at the normal places such as wrists or chest. Not a single strand of hair shone in the blue light. Even their mouth and hands hid behind rumpled cloth. The face lay in shadow, only offering the gleam of eyes from the strange blue flower-shaped light in their grasp.
âWho are you? What do you want?â Etoiny hollered. She already knew the answer to the last question, but she had to scare the intruder away if she stood a chance. And get the attention of the watchmen outside.
Shouts of guards rang out from outside her door. âMiss? Miss!â The handle shook and the wood thudded. Morem had insisted she lock it last night. Little good that has done.
The figure hadnât moved, but at the sound, they looked in that direction.
âGet out!â Etoiny yelled.
With a swish of a shoulder cape Etoiny hadnât noticed before, the figure swung out the balcony glass door and paused to look at Etoiny again. Her heart beat and her breath gathered in a knot in her chest.
The flower light extinguished the same moment Morem burst through the door.
She told Morem all she could remember of the dark, near-silent encounter. Where the figure moved, the strange flower for a light. The rich fabric that swathed the intruder. After taking all the information, lighting some candles and examining the room, she was rushed out before she could remind Morem that the dragon hid in her bathroom. Four khaki-uniformed guards flanked her on all sides, marching her trembling frame down the grand staircase, along the chilly marble floor, and into the open doorway of her fatherâs study through which a fire flickered. Upon her arrival, muscles twitching and mind racing, her father left the window and tucked her under his arm for a side embrace. Concern lines crisscrossed his forehead.
âAre you alright?â
She nodded into the warmth of his chest and let him lead her to a couch that someone had pulled close to the small fire. He slid next to her, his shoulder and leg pressing close for comfort. He watched her, an unnerving habit in situations in which he wanted to protect her.
âIâm truly fine. The intruder had been interested in something... specific.â
âWeâll find them.â Her father glared at the window as though it had committed the crime.
His words landed entirely wrong on her ears, and she blanched. Had Morem whisked the dragon to safety before the House officer inspected her room? And if so, where had he taken it? Her eyes and temple ached at all the worry coursing through them.
When she could no longer attempt to sleep, he encouraged her to sip scalding brown tea. It pooled in her belly, offering warmth and nausea both.
The clock in the dining room chimed three in the morning, dragging Etoiny further from an unexpected doze with each ring.
